ADT Security’s Integrated Systems
The responsible provision of public transport entails round-the-clock monitoring of both the system’s physical integrity and passenger safety. In addition to the ongoing problems of vandalism and otheranti-social behaviour, recent terrorist attacks onpublic transport facilities in London and Madrid have underlined the critical importance of state-of-the-art surveillance to the safety and security of any publictransport system.
In an increasingly uncertain security environment, the New South Wales government-owned Sydney Ferries Corporation has moved to enhance electronic security measures for the protection of both passengers and equipment. Previous success in providing security systems for other Australian government agencies paved the way for ADT Security to secure the $5.5 million contract to upgrade the Sydney Ferries Corporation’s Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system and operate it overthe next five years.
ADT Security was awarded this contract becauseof our technical superiority, monitoring capability and our proven ability to deliver security projects on time and on budget. ADT Security also has the necessary technical capabilities to offer Sydney Ferries Corporation the most highly integrated andcost-effective outcome.
ADT Security’s partnership with the NSW Government on this project emphasises it scommitment to help protect the public from terrorism, crime, violence and anti-social behaviour.
Site description
The Sydney Ferries Corporation’s fleet of passenger ferries shuttles between 44 wharf locations around the Sydney metropolitan area, from Circular Quay to Parramatta in the west, Manly in the north and Watson’s Bay in the east. In the initial phase ofthe project, ADT Security will upgrade the CCTV network across these 44 wharves over a nine month period. This involves:
- Expansion of the existing 197 camerasurveillance network by an additional 87cameras, representing a 44% increase insurveillance capability.
- Upgrading existing security infrastructure.
- Improvements to the Circular Quay, Manly andBalmain Shipyard maintenance and monitoringservices.
- Increasing the quality of live and recorded images
- Improve public information by upgrading the existing public address system
- Upgrade passenger Emergency Help Points and Transport Infoline 131 500 Help Points onexisting wharves
Products/services supplied
ADT Security is providing an extensive range of equipment and services, including:
- CCTV cameras
- Help points
- P.A. speakers
- Life buoy tampers
- Video and audio recording, storage and transmission equipment
- System design, installation, commissioning and maintenance
The new CCTV cameras installed by ADT Security produce higher resolution images than the Corporation’s existing cameras, thus providing higher quality video feeds to the central monitoring point. This monitoring point is provided by ADT Security, who look after in-house monitoring of the Corporation’s CCTV network via a wireless digital network. While Sydney Ferries Corporation maintains its own monitoring control room for operations use, ADT Security has the overall responsibility for monitoring security across the network.
ADT Security is providing a comprehensive solution, including project management, system design, equipment, site installation works, commissioning and on-going maintenance of the installation. Combined with the CCTV network upgrade, ADT Security was successful in securing the maintenance contract for the entire Sydney Ferries CCTV network. This will involve servicing of cameras and networking equipment, as wellas conducting simulation tests on the security monitoring systems to ensure a high level of availability.
Scope of the project
The challenge of maintaining an interactive security system over the extensive geographic spread of the 44 wharves is compounded by the harsh environment in which the equipment is to operate.
The combination of sea salt and humidity is highly corrosive and poses a special threat to sensitive electronic surveillance equipment. However, ADT Security has considerable expertise in providing integrated solutions in similar environments. ADT Security’s dedicated team of design engineers and technicians are able to effectively specify, install and carry out maintenance on appropriate equipment to counteract these environmental conditions.
Globally, with over a 100 years worth of experienceand providing electronic security solutions to over 8 million residential, commercial and retail customers worldwide, ADT Security is well equipped to provide Sydney Ferries’ wharves with effective 24-hour surveillance acting as a deterrent against undesired activity.
Key benefits to Sydney Ferries Corporation
ADT Security’s upgrade of the Sydney Ferries Corporation’s CCTV system will facilitate:
- Increased passenger safety through a higher level of security for the Corporation’s wharves and ferries.
