Theft can seriously erode profits from retail outlets. The Sensormatic® system, exclusively distributed by ADT Security, is a simple and effective way to reduce loss.
Bruce Johns from the Wembley Hotel, one of Perth’s largest hotels, had had enough. Despite all his best efforts using traditional methods, his losses from shoplifting were unacceptably high. Bruce’s experience is not unique; figures from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research show that “theft from retail store” is on the increase; up by 5.8% in the Dec 09 report.
A unique loss prevention problem
Bottle shops typically have a number of high value, low volume items – spirits and exclusive wines – but the majority of sales is in lower priced high volumebeer and wine.
Bruce had seen Sensormatic® systems in a number ofother retail outlets and wondered if there would be a suitable system to protect high value items while he and his staff focused on serving customers. However, he wanted to make sure there would be very few false alarms; false alarms wastes staff time and can embarrasshonest customers.
Sensormatic® Retail Solutions had the answer He found Sensormatic®’s latest bottle tag to be ideal for his situation. The clever design fits bottles of all sizes and provides a visual deterrent to would-be thieves. The bottle tag is quick to attach and its small size means shelving displays do notneed to be reorganised. At the point of sale it is quick and easy to detach so it’s ideal for Bruce’s high turnover operation. As an added bonus, the tags also give better control of transfers between the bottle shop and hotel bars.

The pedestals provide another obvious visual theft deterrent at shop entry while being wide enough to allow easy movement of customers and access for pallet deliveries.
Simple installation andeffective training
ADT Security retail specialists helped Bruce identify the most vulnerable areas in his business, taking into account typical customer flow. Comprehensive staff training on how to attach/detach tags and how to set-up and test the system is all part of the Sensormatic® installation service. Bruce’s staff quickly mastered the system and using the new bottle tags soon became a normal part of work. Importantly, training also included what to do if the alarm sounds. Staff were given useful procedures and things to say so that merchandise is protected while not damaging customer relationships.
