False alarms are a nuisance for everyone around you, including the police and your neighbours – they can even make some people hesitant to use their home alarm system. The most common causes of false alarms are operator error, improper installation, including poorly positioned motion sensors, and a lack of maintenance. The good news is that these causes are preventable.

While research from ADT Security found that 71 per cent of people don’t investigate or call the police when they hear an alarm go off in their local area, having a monitored home security system with a back to base response will ensure that if an alarm is triggered, it will be investigated regardless.

For homeowners who would like to make the most of their security system and minimise false alarms, ADT has the following tips to consider:

1. Familiarise yourself with your alarm system
Ensure that the system is activated every time you leave, regardless of whether you are planning a quick trip to the shops or leaving to go to work for the day. Many user errors are caused by using incorrect keypad codes or leaving a door or window open when activating the alarm. Making sure that you regularly use your alarm system will help you get into the habit of using it correctly. You can even arm the system while you are still at home, providing your family with an added layer of protection.

2. Check the system’s installation
Poorly designed systems and component failure are common causes of false alarms which in many cases are linked to systems that have been installed by DIY enthusiasts or non-specialist professionals. False alarms can also be caused by sensors that have been installed in inappropriate locations, such as near an air vent, doorway or skylight. Incorrect sensor placement exposes the sensors to environmental elements like wind, heat and electromagnetic interference which can set the alarm off. It is also important to be aware that some DIY systems may not comply with Australian Standards AS2201 for intruder alarm systems and therefore may not be eligible for a potential insurer discount.

3. Don’t overlook system maintenance
It is very important to test your alarm system periodically to make sure that it communicates properly to the 24 hour monitoring centre. If you have an ADT Security system, call our operators who can test the system while you are on the phone. It is also important that you follow the recommended maintenance schedule. Spraying insect repellant periodically around the detection sensors can also help to reduce the risk of crawling insects setting off the alarm, and don’t forget to replace batteries in components such as keyless fobs.

In addition to the above practical advice, ADT Security recently introduced an automatic notification service that takes security response to unprecedented levels. The automatic voice response service is a new interactive interface that provides an accurate and speedy way for customers to interact with ADT using text-to-speak technology. This means that if your alarm is triggered either through a power/signaling failure or an unconfirmed intruder alarm, our technology will automatically call the site and key holders in sequence to verify the alarm. This service not only gives customers access to enhanced new response technology, but can also help to reduce the incidents of false alarms through speedy verification.

Your security system is an investment in you and your family’s safety but can only protect you if it is used correctly. For further advice regarding how to minimise false alarms visit our website www.adtsecurity.com.au or call 13 12 38.
